When to Announce Your Pregnancy

Choosing the best time to announce your pregnancy is a highly individual choice. What may be good for one person, may be uncomfortable for another.

First, make sure to tell the father of your baby! Ideally, it would be best if you announced your pregnancy to the father as soon as possible after confirming the news. Whether it’s through a surprise announcement or sharing the moment together when taking the test.

Once the father knows you are expecting, you have to decide who you want to tell next, when, and how.

My husband and I chose to tell our closest family members about our pregnancy within a week of finding out ourselves. We did this because we knew that if anything were to go wrong in our pregnancy, we would want their support.

After having gone through two second-trimester miscarriages, I will continue to tell our closest family and friends about our future pregnancies right off the bat. These are the people who I know will be there to lift my husband and me up if we need it during those crucial early weeks of pregnancy.

During the early weeks of pregnancy, you’ll also be thinking of what you want to post on social media to tell the rest of the world! While there are no hard and fast rules, many expectant parents choose to wait until after the first trimester to announce on social media, usually around the 12 to 14-week mark, when the risk of miscarriage decreases. This gives you time to ensure everything is progressing well and reduces the chance of having to share difficult news publicly if complications arise early in the pregnancy.

Whatever timelines you choose, make sure to tailor your announcements to your own comfort level and preferences. And remember, this is your journey—so enjoy every moment of it!

  1. Gift Bag Surprise: One particularly memorable moment in our journey was when I decided to surprise my partner by placing the positive pregnancy test in a gift bag for him to open when he got home from work. I carefully arranged the test inside a gift bag and excitedly had him sit on the couch to open it right when he got home. Seeing his stunned expression followed by sheer joy and tears of happiness is a moment I will never forget.
  2. Customized Onesie: Present him with a customized onesie with a message like “Daddy’s MVP” or “Hello Daddy, I can’t wait to meet you.” This can be a sweet and unexpected way to announce the news.
  3. Scavenger Hunt: Set up a scavenger hunt with clues leading to the big reveal at the end. Each clue can be related to parenthood or the journey ahead, building anticipation until he finally discovers the surprise.
  4. Pregnancy Test Picture Frame: Place the pregnancy test in a beautifully decorated shadow box. Give it to him as a gift. As he unwraps it, watch his reaction as he realizes what it means.

  1. Customized Gifts: When it came time to announce our pregnancy to close family, I wanted to make it extra special. I decided to get creative and give each of them a personalized shirt that announced their new titles of grandpa, aunt, and uncle. Seeing their faces light up with joy and excitement as they read the messages on their shirts was a heartwarming moment I’ll always cherish. It was a simple yet meaningful way to share our happiness with those we love most. Other Personalized gifts could be mugs, keychains, or picture frames with phrases like “World’s Best Aunt/Uncle/Grandparent – Coming Soon!”
