Diapers: The Foundation of Every Diaper Bag
Diapers are the cornerstone of a well-stocked diaper bag. It’s essential to pack diapers based on how long you plan to be out and about. A general rule of thumb is to carry at least one diaper per hour of planned activities, with a few extras to spare for unexpected mishaps.
Baby Wipes: A Clean Start Every Time
In conjunction with diapers, baby wipes are essential for keeping your little one fresh and clean. A full pack of wipes should always be on hand, with the habit of replenishing it as soon as it gets low, ensuring you never run out while out and about. I use baby wipes for diaper changes, wiping dirty hands, cleaning faces or runny noses, and so much more.
Diaper Cream: Protecting Your Baby’s Skin
For parents of newborns, diaper rash cream is an important addition to the diaper bag. This becomes particularly essential as your baby grows and becomes more prone to rashes. A separate tube for the diaper bag and home ensures you’re always prepared, no matter where you are.
Changing Pad: A Comfortable Space for Baby
You ever go out somewhere with your baby and they don’t have anywhere for you to change them?
Or maybe a place has a changing table, but no covers to place down on it as a barrier between the table and your baby?
Changing a diaper on the go can be challenging without the proper equipment. A changing pad provides a clean and cushioned surface, protecting your baby from unhygienic surfaces and ensuring a comfortable diaper change, even in the most unexpected locations.
Luckily, most standard diaper bags come with a changing pad. I recommend looking for this when picking out which diaper bag you want to buy.
2-3 Outfit Changes: Be Ready for the Unexpected
Babies have a knack for getting messy at the most inopportune times. Packing a couple of extra outfits, especially during longer outings or dinners, ensures you’re ready for any spills, spit-ups, blowouts, or excessive sweating.
I recommend packing your least favorite outfits in the diaper bag, that way they can stay in there until you need them. Pro tip: restock the diaper bag as soon as you get home so you don’t forget anything at a moment’s notice.
Small Toys/Teethers: Keeping Baby Entertained
As your baby grows, they become more aware of their surroundings and may require stimulation. Small toys or teethers provide entertainment and distraction, making outings more enjoyable for both parent and baby. Try toys with lots of colors, textures, and music to keep them entertained.
Thin Blanket: Multiple Uses for Comfort and Hygiene
A thin blanket serves multiple purposes, from providing a clean surface for your baby to sit on to keep them warm in air-conditioned spaces. It’s a versatile item that’s worth including in your diaper bag.
Nasal Aspirator: Handling Baby’s Nasal Congestion
Babies are susceptible to nasal congestion, there’s no way around it. Having a nasal aspirator on hand can help clear their airways. There are many choices on the market for this such as a bulb syringe, NeilMed battery-operated nasal aspirator, or the Frida Baby NoseFrida Aspirator. This simple tool is a must-have, especially during the flu and cold seasons.
OPTIONAL:
Medications and a Thermometer
While not essential for all parents, having medications and a thermometer in your diaper bag can provide peace of mind. For parents with colicky babies or those prone to fever, carrying necessary medications ensures you’re always prepared for unexpected illnesses.
Some common medications to have on hand for babies include Tylenol, simethicone, probiotics, Benadryl, Neosporin, and other first-aid products. As your child ages, it may be worthwhile to invest in a travel-size first aid kit, especially as the baby gets more adventurous.
Sun Hat and Sunscreen: Shielding Baby from Harmful Rays
For outings in sunny climates, protecting your baby from the sun’s rays is crucial. A sun hat and baby-safe sunscreen can safeguard their delicate skin, preventing sunburn and discomfort.
Bibs/Burp Cloths and Extra Pacifiers (and clips)
Lastly, bringing bibs and burp cloths can help you quickly and efficiently clean up messes. Additionally, an extra pacifier and clip can save you from frantic searches if your baby misplaces their primary one.
Food and Feeding Essentials
Once your baby begins eating solids, bringing along teething crackers and baby food jars or pouches is important for keeping them satisfied during longer outings or meal times. Breastfeeding mothers may also want to include a breastfeeding cover and other essentials.
Bottles/Formula: Feeding Your Little One On-the-Go
For formula-fed babies, packing bottles, formula, and clean water is essential. Using a travel case for formula can help you portion out servings, reducing the bulk of carrying a large container. I recommend bringing one bottle per feed as you won’t want to worry about washing bottles while out and about. For picky babies, it is even recommended to bring a travel bottle warmer, but that is all dependent on the needs of your baby.
Conclusion
Preparing a diaper bag for your newborn may seem like a daunting task, but it’s crucial for ensuring a smooth outing with your little one. By including these essential items, you’ll be well-equipped to handle any situation while on the go. Remember, each parent and baby’s needs may differ, so feel free to adjust this list based on your preferences and experiences.
